Tonight was one of the oddest poker nights I have been to. To start off, we planned on a 6:30 start instead of a 7:30 one due to the We Became Actors show at 9. I was working late and ended up leaving at 6 and running into Rob in the parking garage. Since he was heading directly to poker, we decided just to ride together after I called Nick and said I'd just meet him there to avoid being late. So it's a little different, but not crazy yet.
We get upstairs and everyone has thrown their money on the table. There are 10 people in the room and only 80 dollars on the table. Everyone checked their wallets or pockets and said that they had paid. It's the same group as every week so there's no cause to think that anyone is lying. Finally, Ed threw in a 20 to make it even and we started playing. Luke was first out, followed by Seth. But then Isaac decided he had to leave, so Luke got back by playing his chips. We got down to 5 players (me, Nick, James, Paul and Dave) and go around and around the table before I finally lose and there are only 4 players. The other guys are getting ready to go to the show and Dave, despite his best showing in months (he was chip leader by far), decided he was done and pushed all his chips over to me. Since he was guaranteed at least $10 back at this point he took that, then decreed that if he won more Ed should get the random $20 he threw in back.
Dave's chips truely were magic, because I was dealt an A-J offsuit the next hand and took out another player (after 15 minutes of 5 players, we knocked people off in consecutive hands: me, then James). It was one of the top 3 hands I saw all night. Nick then took out Paul, so only Nick and I were left. Paul got his $10, Ed got his $20 and there was $60 left on the table. Since only Nick and I were left and everyone else was leaving (and it wasn't our house) we just threw in the towel and called it a game. Dave wouldn't split any more of the winnings with us so we somehow ended up with the first place prize.
So the recap is: early start time, money not adding up when it should, two players giving their chips away to a non-player, and no definative winner. Moral: I shouldn't really be the only girl at poker.

We Made It!
Our first month of being married has flown by, with trips to Pennsylvania/New York, Wisconsin, and Iowa; two Packer games; and Cindy and Ryan visiting us here. We slowed down a little tonight and went out to eat at Red Lobster. We got a table right away and enjoyed yummy seafood. I ordered a drink and it came in a large glass - so large the opening on the top was bigger than my hand! There's a picture of it on the Red Lobster beverage menu online but it really doesn't convey the enormity of the glass it came in. Nick had a beer and an Irish coffee, cheers to us for making it this far!

Christmas is Here!
Ok, last post of the night :) I realize I've been going a little crazy, but three short posts are better than one long one, right? As I mentioned earlier, we've been getting ready for Christmas, so I thought I'd post a few pictures to show what we've accomplished in less than 24 hours:
Over the summer I noticed that we had a nail stuck in the brick next to our front door so we picked up this wreath when we bought our tree today. It's the perfect width for the space we have.
Here it is! The first shot of our tree! I actually pre-wrapped presents on Wednesday before we left for Iowa so that I would have some to go underneath it as soon as all the decorations were up.
Nick also hung lights up outside - I'll have to get a picture of those soon and add them so you can see how festive our house looks! I love a decorated house! :)

Good Luck Charm
Nick spotted this squirrel in our backyard this morning. I haven't seen one of these critters since college and it was his first sighting ever so we thought we'd share it with everyone else in case you've never seen one either.
Thanksgiving Post
Nick and I spent a fun Thanksgiving in Iowa. Erin surprised us by flying in on Tuesday night instead of Wednesday night so she and I spent Wednesday Christmas shopping. The idea was that she could buy presents and leave them at our house so she didn't have to travel with them when she comes back for Christmas but I brainwashed her into only buying presents for Nick and me so I think it was only partly successful. The good news is that the stores were empty yet full of good deals so I at least got some meaningful shopping done. :)
When Nick got home from work we headed down to Iowa for the real celebration. We had a close call on the way down. Minutes after we missed the exit where we were planning to stop to eat and gas up the car, my gas light went on. Since we were in rural Iowa, of course the next 5 exits that we passed had no gas station or lights whatsoever (the exit we were planning on stopping at is "the exit" in this part of Iowa and has about 10 fast food places, a Perkins, and multiple gas stations. Everyone stops there so there is nothing else nearby). Finally we were saved by the town of Hampton. We stopped at the BP station there (wondering if that is the one our friend Rob used to work at) and put 11.25 gallons into my 12 gallon tank. What a relief. The rest of the journey was thankfully incident-free.
Thanksgiving morning we went to church and I got a tour of the parish, including the basement and the area behind the alter. After that it was turkey and naps for everyone, followed by a visit to Grandma's house and putting up the tree at Nick's parent's house. On Friday I took my first-ever trip into Carroll. We ate at a Chinese restaurant and made plans to come back later to see Casino Royale, my first-ever James Bond movie. I'll be perfectly honest, I went into it expecting not to like it. But Daniel Craig drew me in and I ended up really enjoying myself. I don't think I could watch the fight scenes again without getting bored, but the first time around was very enjoyable.
Getting attacked by the Bobsey Twins on Thanksgiving morning.
Erin divides up the childhood ornaments of her and her brothers.
And that was Thanksgiving. On Saturday morning we ate leftover turkey and then said good-bye. Erin hung out with us on Saturday night, helping us clean up the place and start decorating for Christmas (yes we are excellent hosts). Today we dropped her off at the airport and got our own tree from the tree lot and put that up, then just sat around and enjoyed spending a non-work day at home!

Happy Birthday Dave
Tonight we celebrated Dave's birthday, a special event because he is normally in Michigan when it occurs. We went out to eat at Granite City with him and Seth then came back for a game of Settlers, something we haven't played in a long, long time. It was a very evenly matched game, with everyone sitting around 7 for quite some time. Seth and I were both helped by the "thief war" between Nick and Dave to try and push each other out of the game. Seth pulled ahead to 9, but I got to 11 on my next turn and was stuck with 2 clay, a wood, and a wheat. No one would trade me for a sheep so I had to wait until the next turn to claim victory! :)
The Lost Post
Note to everyone: be wary of Picasa's "Post to Blogger" function. Maybe I got a hiccup, maybe it was the real deal, but my post from about 10:30 last night is nowhere to be seen. With that Public Service Announcement over, here is my attempt at recreation.
Yes, we were at "the game" on Sunday. And if possible, it was even more depressing watching it live than it would have been if I had been watching it on TV. Despite Brady's kind words (8j), it was still a terrible game for Green Bay fans, made worse by the potential loss of Favre (although according to the Packers, that won't be an issue, but we didn't know that on Sunday).
So what are the good points from the weekend? We had a nice time seeing a ton of my family, I got some Christmas shopping done, and despite losing all three of my starting quarterbacks in fantasy, I managed to win all three games. Not only that, I got some decent pictures as well:
It only took 3 weeks of marriage to get him into a Packer sweatshirt!
Look at the cute Favre backers!
This one is for Nick - his favorite player takes the field. He finished with 1 solo tackle and 4 assists.
Gilbert Brown (brown coat) oversaw the coin flip as part of the "10 years since we won the Superbowl" celebration.

The ladies are back! Katie and I were representing our kind tonight in a field of 8 poker players. I won the first game and Katie the second :)

A New Volleyball Season Begins
Tonight we played some pretty typical Bacos volleyball in our first game of the season: destroyed the other team in the first game, squandered a large lead in the second to lose narrowly, and destroyed ourselves in the third. There are two very special All-Heart awards though:
(1) Rob - his amazing "thumbs down defense" hit for a point in the first game.
(2) Dawn - her serves in the third game made the score look like it was far more evenly matched than it actually was (I think she got 5 and we lost on the volley, not a bad serve).
Thanks for putting your all into the game!
Afterwards I dragged everyone to the Big 10 restaurant in Hopkins. I've only been to the on-campus one so I wasn't sure what to expect, but this one was nice too (and a short drive from where we play volleyball). Unfortunately they were all out of roast beef, but the food was still excellent.

Football!
This post is all about football! First, my fantasy teams are doing very well. I have a 7-3 record (6 game winning streak!) and a 6-4 record. Well, I guess two out of three isn't bad. :)
Next, with this past Sunday's game, I have now attended my first three NFL games. Oddly enough, they were all division games: Vikings/Bears, Packers/Bears, Packers/Vikings. The only current division rival I haven't seen live yet is the Lions - maybe some day.
Cindy, Ryan and Nick outside the dome
The military provided pre-game entertainment - the band played Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue" while a soloist sang the words
Favre doing his pre-game warm-ups
We had two sets of tickets for the game. Nick and I took the end zone tickets first - we were in row 6 and just to the left of the goal post. The coolest part of the first half was Driver's long touchdown run - we weren't quite sure how close the Vikings player was to him so we were screaming at him to run faster! After that, Brett came charging down the field, picked him up, and carried him off.
At the half, we switched seats with Cindy and Ryan and ended up on the 5-yard line. The second half wasn't quite as exciting as the first half was, but we did still have a great view of the game. Cindy and Ryan got to see the big hit on Henderson close-up - they actually saw his mouthguard go flying out (we only saw the helmet fall off).
The whole thing was so much fun. The entire game felt like it lasted about an hour, not the four hours we were actually in the stadium. Add that to the Dome dogs and wonderful Packers victory and it was a perfect day. :)

Movie Weekend
More fun things now that we have free time: yesterday my Cars movie arrived in the mail along with Nick's V for Vendetta. To celebrate, we invited all of our non-high stakes poker playing friends over for dinner and to watch my new movie. We headed out to check out the new Costco before anyone arrived and came home with a giant pot pie:
Note the regular-sized cookie sheet as a size comparison. We made this thing into 11 servings, and many of them were quite large!
We've admired them many times but never had the nerve to buy one because we knew we wouldn't even come close to finishing it. It was extremely good though so if you're coming to a party at our house in the future it will probably make a repeat appearance.
Today everyone did a variety of things. Cindy and Ryan checked out the Mall of America (it was Ryan's first trip there) and Nick worked on Icehouse 2.0 with Dave and Rob. Apparently with all the experience from Icehouse 1.0 it went much smoother this year. :) I went to the DMV and got my new license, then returned a bunch of the stuff that I bought for the wedding that we didn't end up using (I admit, I went a little crazy shopping the week before worrying about how it would all play out). We all met up for supper at California Pizza Kitchen, then went to see Talladega Nights: the ballad of Ricky Bobby at the discount theatre. I think I watched more already this weekend than I have in the past month!
Tomorrow is the main event: the Packer-Vikings game! With the way the Minnesota offense and the Packers defense have been playing, this should be an easy victory but we'll wait until tomorrow to see how it all plays out!

Things I suddenly have time for
Baking! I haven't done that since sometime last summer. Tonight Nick and I had fun making Choco-Peanut Butter Cups for his work potluck tomorrow. They were a category winner at the last Pillsbury Bake-Off and I've been wanting to try them out ever since I saw the picture and read the recipe. :)
The Honeymoon
Now the post you've all been waiting for: our honeymoon story. Nick and I honeymooned at Caesar's Poconos Resort in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. We had an easy flight there and no problems with the connecting flight in Detroit (we even had time to grab some Fuddrucker's for lunch - yum!). After an hour-long drive through the beautiful mountains we made the final turn into the resort:
The resort is in the valley below the driving range. This is what our first glance looked like but the picture is from later on in our trip - you can see Nick golfing!
When we got to the bottom of the hill and saw the check in building I was a little concerned. I don't know what I was expecting, but it was something more modern than the building we pulled up to:
The inside was decorated in a similar style - lots of fake Greek decorations!
But the good news was, our room was exactly as advertised and the resort was situated on beautiful man-made Lake Wallenpaupack. We could even see the lake from our room:
Isn't it gorgeous?
We had a nice relaxing week. We spent a lot of time trying out different sports: tennis, horseback riding, racketball, driving range (golf), mini golf, shuffleboard, billiards, and archery to name a few. They had daily "challenges" and nightly entertainment - mostly bands and a few comedians. Each night was themed, although this week they dropped "Mardi Gras" for "Halloween party":
We didn't have a costume for Nick initially, but we spied a billboard for a costume shop in the mall and stopped on Tuesday morning to check it out. Not only did this one match perfectly, we found out later that there was a rumor going around that we had actually gotten married in the costumes!
On Saturday we geared up for the next big part of our trip: an afternoon in New York City! It was funny because a lot of people at the resort were on vacation FROM NYC so it was a completely different mindset for them than for us. It was a neat drive in, we were going through mountains and valleys when all of a sudden we were up on a crest of a hill and saw the skyline!
We were awed by our first look.
We also got to see the Meadowlands, where Eli Manning likes to hang out, an unexpected bonus. We then got very lucky. We were planning on meeting my aunt Dawn for lunch in the city and when I gave her a call as we were getting close it turns out we were only about 10 minutes behind her on the freeway! She was able to direct us to very easy and affordable parking. We all walked down 42nd Street to go to a resturant near Broadway, with my uncle Chris pointing out the sights. We ended up at the Harmony Bar where I had my first hamburger in a week (I was getting sick of the "resturant" style food the resort served every night). We had a great time catching up with them until it was time to go and see a Broadway musical:
Dawn took this picture of us outside the theatre.
Wicked exceeded all my expectations for the show and Nick liked it a lot too. It was amazing how intimate the theatre seemed and how automated all of the sets were. We're looking forward to going back to NYC and seeing another musical there.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. After the show and dinner in the city we headed back to the hotel where we had to pack up and go home. Our flight home was a little more eventful - the first leg of it was delayed an hour because our plane wasn't there yet! I do have to give props to the crew though - when it did land they had the old passengers off and us on in under 20 minutes. We made it to Detroit with just enough time to race down the C terminal, through the psychodelic tunnel, up to the A terminal, and grab a tram to take us all the way to gate A66. We were some of the last people on the plane, but we made it!
Now it's back to life in Minnesota, getting ready for this weekend's big game and working on thank you notes and cleaning up the mess. It feels good to be home but it was hard to go back to work after two and a half weeks off!

Wedding Pictures
In the interest of my sanity, I'm going to break down this down into a couple of posts. The week leading up to our wedding was crazy (exibit A: my poor neglected blog), but the weekend was wonderful! Early in the week they were predicting snow, but we never saw it. The temperatures stayed in the 50s which is really quite comfortable for this time of year.
I'll start off with the Mustang saga. Nick and I always joke about getting a Mustang so for our wedding we decided to go for it and rent one. I called up Hertz and tried to reserve a Mustang convertible but was told that Minneapolis only had hardtops. No big deal, it's still a Mustang, right? Well, we get to the Hertz counter on Friday morning and the lady looks at her computer for a long time and then asks "Does it have to be a Mustang?" to which we said "Yes!". Turns out they only had convertibles so we got a free upgrade! Walking out in the garage, we saw two convertible Mustangs and no hard tops. Here we are with our beauty:
Yes, it was actually warm enough that we drove around on Friday AND Saturday with the top down!
We had a lot of fun getting ready for the wedding. The guys went outside with the photographer, and us girls got ready in the basement with the other photographer. We took doubles of all the pictures with our own cameras:
My sisters helping me out. Jill did my hair and makeup and Lauren appointed herself the "train carrier". She carried it for me the entire time we were getting ready in the basement.
The wrap around my bouquet. I loved how they made a flower out of the pins.
Posing with my mom.
After we were all ready, it was time for the grueling two-hour group photo session. For me it seemed to fly by, but I was sick of smiling at the end (and I don't think I was the only one).
Don't we look great? Cindy, Marc, Jill, Karin, Nick, Adam, Erin, Thomas
Our crowning final touch was personalized cakes. I'm probably a little biased, but I thought they were the best wedding cake I've ever eaten:
They were all different flavors! And yes, Nick did get cream cheese frosting on his Hawkeye cake which is why it appears a little more yellow than all the others.
The dance, like the rest of the day, was over before I knew it. We had a lot of fun and wouldn't change anything even if we had the option to go back and do so. We are so lucky!

Welcome Back!
Welcome to the new blog, I'm glad you were able to find us again. I'm afraid the old blog is going to drift off into the sunset, but that's just the way of the world sometimes. Come back soon to see pictures from our wedding and honeymoon and read about some of the adventures we had - I'll be adding stuff in in between loads of laundry as I try to enjoy my last day of leisure before rejoining the real world and going back to work tomorrow.
